What Is Laser Marking?

Laser marking is an identification process performed by applying a laser beam to a surface so that it leaves a permanent mark. Because it is engraved directly onto the surface without using ink, labels or paint, it does not fade, wipe off or scratch off over time. It is preferred for serial-number, part-code and QR-code applications in industrial part tracking; and in the decorative sector for producing personalized gifts and architectural accessories. In our workshop, the fiber laser marking machine can perform permanent marking on stainless, aluminum, plastic, wood and ceramic surfaces.

Technical Details

In laser marking, the laser beam focused on the surface leaves a mark by oxidizing the surface layer (color change), vaporizing it (engraving) or peeling the surface (embossing). On stainless steel, oxidation marking (a black mark) is applied; on aluminum, anodic marking (a white mark); and on plastic, the color-change technique. The mark depth can be adjusted from 0.01 mm to 0.5 mm; in industrial part tracking, a depth of 0.05 mm is generally preferred. QR-code and barcode marking, through software loaded onto the machine, allows automatic serial-number generation; this feature is especially preferred in line production in manufacturing.
