What Is a Totem Sign?

Totem signs are the most effective advertising element in situations where your business needs to be noticed from a distance and while in motion. They are designed for fuel stations along motorways, shopping-mall entrances, automotive galleries, hospitals and hotels. At Techno Reklam in Iskenderun, we produce double-sided, illuminated totems from 3 metres up to 12 metres. A totem sign is both an advertising board and an engineering structure; it should not be erected without a wind-load calculation, a ground survey and structural approval.

Technical Details

In the totem skeleton we use quality-certified St-37 or St-52 grade steel profile. Generally a 100x100 mm or 120x120 mm box profile is used, with 150x150 mm preferred for totems over 6 metres. The concrete foundation volume varies between 1.5 and 4 m³ according to the totem's height and the region's wind speed; the rebar diameter is 12–14 mm. On the front face, 3–5 mm aluminium composite panel and branded LED modules are used; the transformer capacity inside is kept 20% above the total load. All metal surfaces are double-protected with galvanising + epoxy paint. On digital LED-screen totems, IP65 P6/P8 modules, an automatic dimmer and a remote control module are included in our standard offering.

Areas of Use

The price boards of roadside fuel stations, the brand logos of automotive galleries, the wayfinding totems of shopping-mall entrances and hospital/hotel signs are the most common areas of application. A double-sided totem allows drivers coming from both directions to be addressed at the same time. A digital LED-screen totem is preferred in promotion-intensive sectors because campaign visuals can be changed remotely. Matte-surface totems serving as a nameplate are also requested at the entrances of housing estates and complexes.

Totem Signs in Iskenderun and Hatay

Because of its gulf location, Iskenderun is exposed to wind speeds exceeding 80 km/h, especially in the spring months. This is the main factor that determines the structural calculation of totem signs. In the projects we have carried out along the Belen pass and Tayfur Sökmen Boulevard, we work out the wind-load calculation based on over 100 km/h and increase the foundation volume accordingly. For totems close to the coast, we recommend a 304 stainless steel skeleton directly instead of galvanised protection, and use fully stainless steel bolts for the clamp systems. This approach extends the totem's lifespan to 12–15 years.
