What Is UV Printing?

UV printing is a modern printing technology in which the ink is cured with ultraviolet light immediately after being sprayed onto the surface. While traditional solvent prints require waiting time for the ink to penetrate the surface, in UV printing the print is ready to use within seconds of coming off the machine. This feature makes UV printing the only viable technology for direct printing on hard, non-absorbent surfaces such as glass, wood, metal, acrylic, composite panel, stone, and ceramic. Our workshop's UV printer can print directly in various sizes, from A3 up to a 250x130 cm bed size.

Technical Details

UV ink polymerizes under an LED-UV lamp; this process is completed in a very short time of 0.5–2 seconds. Because UV ink is highly pigmented, its color saturation is higher than that of solvent and eco-solvent prints. The embossed effect (3D) is achieved by printing UV ink multiple times over the same area to create a physical raised surface; this feature is heavily preferred for business cards, door plates, certificates, and special art prints. A white ink layer provides opacity; it prevents the color behind transparent surfaces (glass, acrylic) from mixing into the image. Our workshop is set up with a CMYK + White + Varnish (5-color) system.

Areas of Use

The areas where UV printing is heavily used include: direct printing on glass for storefront and meeting-room graphics; personalized printing on wooden doors and furniture; permanent printing on metal panels and plates; direct printing on acrylic (signage production); decorative printing on stone and ceramic; logo printing on promotional products (USB drives, pens, lighters, etc.); and custom printed production of door plates and nameplates. UV printing has also become popular in the art and decoration sector in recent years.
